(I must be dreaming... a sunny morning? On a Saturday? We were out early today to grab coffee and when I walked out the door I finally felt that summery feeling. In my mind, summer = ice cream, so that's why I'm rerunning the post below from last June. It got quite a response the first time around and I hope more of you will weigh in now).
I have a favorite ice cream spot, but it's in Mystic -- a little far from home. I love it because the ice cream is delicious and you really feel like you're going back in time when you enter the doors. Everything just smells and tastes like Summer at the Mystic Sweets Shop. Now that my daughter is old enough, I'm on the lookout for a place in Fairfield County that's just as wonderful to bring her, so I'm turning to you. I've found two places that are good for very different reasons (see below), but they are not my favorites:

- Dairy Queen on Summer Street in Stamford. If you don't mind a little dinginess and a super long line on hot Summer evenings, then DQ is the place to be. Their Blizzards never disappoint and you can't go wrong with the soft serve.
- And on the total other end of the fancy spectrum is Gelatissimo Artisan Gelato at 26 Forest Street in New Canaan. Here you'll find a beautiful, sparkling interior and delicious authentic Italian gelato. Their web site is still under construction at www.gelatissimo.net but you can read more about Gelatissimo by clicking here.

1) The Dairy Inn on Hope Street is just as good as DQ, IMO, but little to no line!
2) Cold Stone Creamery is always an experience.
3) But the best is Dr. Mike's in Bethel...fantastic little place (and while you're in Bethel, go to the Sycamore!!). Its a beautiful drive up by the reservoir and the burgers are worth the trip.
~You know who...
Marcus Dairy in Danbury!
And of course Cold Stone...the birthday remix is the best!!
The surroundings are not so glamorous, but I am partial to Gofer on High Ridge (LOVE their Gofer Lite low-cal situation). I think they have one of those in Darien as well.
Also, the dingy Dairy Inn on Hope is within walking distance of us, always drops coupons in the Val Pak and/or the Money Mailer, and has crazy rainbow vanilla ice cream, which makes the littles happy.
OK - I also just remembered:
Darlene’s Heavenly Desires in Old Greenwich. It is delicious...and Old Greenwich is a great place for a family walkaround...I posted about it a long time ago, here:

My local favorite in Brennan's 101 in Rowayton. The ice cream is delicious, and if you start off with a fresh lobster roll before you're really in heavan!

My favorite is Wells Hollow Ice-cream farm in Shelton. Exit 12 off CT-8. Can't beat eating delicious ice-cream while overlooking cows and roosters! While they don't actually make the ice-cream themselves it comes direct from a farm in Maine, I believe. Well worth an outing. Cathy
Scoops in Wilton... kiddos love it!
I like all things cold and sweet. Here are some of my favorites:
Canaan Parish Sweet Shoppe for Italian ice - New Canaan, CT

Ridgefield Ice Cream Shop for soft serve - Ridgefield, CT
Super Duper Weenie for milk shakes - Fairfield, CT
Sycamore Drive-In for root beer floats - Bethel, CT
Valencia's for batidos (fresh fruit blended with milk and ice) - Norwalk, CT
Hey thanks Baccara! That's a very thorough list.
Brendan's 101 in Rowayton.
When I was pregnant, I was obsessed with Stew Leonard's vanilla soft serve with Rainbow Sprinkles. They have the sprinkles in FC. I taste tested many to find that out!
I love Gelatissimo too.
I have also heard that Strada 18 has awesome gelato, but haven't tried it yet.
Super Duper Weenie for Milkshakes!!!!!! wish I found it whan I was pregnant.
Helado Vasque, new on the block for the best homemade Gelato-Bridgeport, CT
Another vote for Helados Vasquez in Bridgeport. Their gelatos are refreshing and delicious.
Brendan's 101 in Rowayton
Rich Farm (http://www.richfarmicecream.com/)in Oxford - fresh made daily and 80% cream - straight from the cows on the property. well worth the drive
Il Bacio in Danbury (30 Germantown Road)- if you love chocolate, must have the cardiac arrest. otherwise, trypeaches and berries.
both places have homemade waffle cones, il bacio has waffle bowls also.
Forgot to mention that D&D Pizza in Norwalk has Buck's (from Milford) -- with free delivery!
Also, Fat Cat Pie Company in Norwalk makes the most wonderful honey lavender ice cream sandwiches.
Many thanks for the recommendations to Helados Vazquez. The Pink Grapefruit sorbetto is heavenly; I can't wait to go back for more!
Timothy's in Bridgeport has delicious ice cream. Helados Vazquez, across the street, has an amazing green apple sorbetto.
Definitely Sweet Ashley's in East Norwalk--family owned and operated & best ice cream around!
Ferris Acres Creamery in Newtown- the best ice cream ever! They are the last working dairy farm in Fairfield County. It is a great spot to go get ice cream, check out the cows and enjoy the beautiful country setting.
