FCC Readers Save 10% With Penguin Swim School!* Classes Offered in Stamford and Stratford.

Please welcome FCC's latest sponsor, The Penguin Swim School.

Just in time for pool and beach season, The Penguin Swim offers private (1 teacher to 1 student) and semi-private (1 teacher to 2 students) swim lessons for children ages 2 and up. The lessons are individualized, therefore the students learn at a much faster pace. The program emphasizes gentle and patient encouragement to help children progress at their own level of learning readiness with their individualized lessons. The program also promises effective learning incentives through stimulation, positive reinforcement, patience and practice. With loving assurance, reluctant children are guided through new water experiences and past apprehension, allowing the process to unfold naturally. The balanced program results in learning new skills while maintaining enjoyment and enthusiasm.

Classes are offered Newbury Commons in Stamford and at the Homewood Suites in Stratford.

My three-year-old took a sample semi-private swim lesson with The Penguin Swim two weeks ago and loved it. I noticed that Kim (co-owner and instructor) was really attentive and really put the kids at ease. My daughter's been blowing bubbles and "swimming" in the tub ever since and I feel more confident having her around the water, even after just one lesson, because Kim explained the importance of water safety.

Click here for class schedules. Hurry spring session starts next week!

For more information visit www.thepenguinswimschool.com and when you mention FairfieldCountyChild.com you'll receive 10% off in the Stamford location (offer expires May 16, 2010).

* 10% discount valid in Stamford location only

Tick Stoppers - Special Deal for FCC Readers!

Have you met FCC's latest sponsor, Tick Stoppers? Based in Fairfield and serving all of Fairfield County, Tick Stoppers is a division of Charron Tree and Shrub Care and they offer both natural organic and synthetic options to keep your yard tick-free.

Owner Tom Charron (shown with one of his 3 daughters)  is a licensed arborist and he's passionate about keeping our yards safe from ticks. Ticks are the #1 cause of Lyme Disease, a life-threatening condition that originated in Connecticut.

Tom recommends a 4 step tick program to keep your kids safe from ticks this summer. In his own words, here's why:

The first application is done in April to target the adult ticks that have survived the winter.  The 2nd application is in late May-early June and targets the hatching nymphs.  3rd application is in August to target the larvae at peak activity and the 4th application is in October to target adults at peak activity.  The treatments kill the current population on the property when we treat it.

Call Tick Stoppers at (203) 993-5745 or email them at tickstoppers@gmail.com for a free estimate. Just mention FairfieldCountyChild.com and when you sign up for a tick program  you'll receive your 4th spray free!

FREE Fitness Class for Moms-to-Be this Saturday at the Tully Center's Health & Fitness Institute in Stamford!

Elaine Petrone

There's still time to register for the Miracle Ball Workshop on Saturday, April 10 from 1-2:30 at Tully Health Center in Stamford. Just mention FairfieldCountyChild.com when you register and the $20 fee will be waived!

Call 203-2764567 to register or for more information e-mail the instructor Elaine Petrone at elaine@elainepetrone.com. You can read more about Elaine on her site at www.elainepetrone.com or read on for more about her Miracle Ball method.

Why the Miracle Ball Method for Moms?

The Miracle Ball Method works on both muscles and your skeletal alignment. Exercise works on your muscles. Pregnancy is a huge challenge for your muscles and the alignment of your skeleton. Think of the skeleton as your underlying infrastructure for your whole body. As the baby or babies grow the muscles, and eventually the bones accommodate the size of the baby in your belly. The tilting of the pelvis can put pressure on low back, cause sciatic pain, make it difficult to sleep, fatigue just to name a few of the discomforts women face during pregnancy. These physical challenges can make a person feel overwhelmed emotionally as well.

The Miracle Ball Method for Moms workshop this Saturday at The Tully Health Center Health and Fitness Institute will help you to adjust your whole body. This will take the pressure off the areas that are tight while toning you up and relaxing your mind and body. You will sleep better and learn things you can do throughout your pregnancy to keep that beautiful body strong but not stiff.

An 8 week program will follow Saturday's class beginning Saturday May 22nd.

Exclusive for FCC Readers! Two FREE Prenatal Fitness Classes at Stamford Hospital's Health & Fitness Institute April 10 and May 1

Please welcome FCC's latest sponsor, Stamford Hospital's Health and Fitness Institute!

As an FCC reader, you're invited to come to a FREE prenatal fitness class at Stamford Hospital on April 11. The class is taught by Elaine Petrone, author of the Miracle Ball Method books (over a million copies in print), Her method is the opposite of exercise. Where as exercise moves muscles, The Petrone Method adjusts the alignment of your bones as well. This is essential for pregnant women with back pain, sciatic trouble, fatigue, excess stress and sleeplessness. Just mention FairfieldCountyChild.com when you call to register for the class and the $20 fee will be waived.

Read on for some of Elaine's important fitness tips for pregnant women:

Stay flexible: When your body is flexible your stress levels lower, sleep improves and any chronic aching from stress or alignment issues (like low back ache, headaches, neck and shoulder tension, TMJ and more) is relieved. It is a big challenge for pregnant women to stay flexible. A key way to improve flexibility is to understand breathing. Most people are not aware how they way they breathe influences so many things that could greatly improve the look and feel of their body.

Breathing is the single most important thing you can do to improve your flexibility. Without the oxygen your muscles are tight, we are tired achy and most people don’t realize that better breathing burns more calories so your metabolism improves. This is a must for during and after your pregnancy. When muscles are oxygenated they lengthen. The belly will flatten easier after your pregnancy and your posture will improve. You will have much better muscle tone, energy and your stress levels will improve.

Most people think "breathe" and they usually take a deep breath. This won't make all the improvements mentioned above. Most people don’t realize we spend a lot of our days holding our breath. Notice how much you hold your breath during your day.

When you hold your breath you are holding your muscles. It becomes a vicious cycle and most of us never realize it. We try to stretch ,we try to deep breathe, and when we are pregnant most of us are already overwhelmed with so many of the things we need to do. We can be tired, stressed, stiff and uncomfortable.

SO what do we do to improve our breathing? One of the things Elaine teaches  is to “un” work the tension in your muscles. It is the complete opposite of exercise so you will find you are doing very little but relieving a lot of discomforts while re-shaping your body.

TIPSSSS:

Start by making a longer exhalation on the sound of the ssss. This will help to tone your diaphragm so you can bring oxygen into your muscles much easier. As you tone the diaphragm you begin to strengthen the most important muscle in your body.

Exhale on the "ssss" sound. It is a hisssssssssing sound like a snake or the sound of a radiator. You can do it anywhere. You can do it watching television or laying in bed in the morning.

Make your "sssss" sound every day for 5-7 minutes. Take time after each exhalation to observe any changes you feel your body making. Your body will begin to improve on its own. If you notice no changes after the first s sound try it again. Sense what muscles you are using to make the sound. If you are straining your neck or shoulders rest your hands on your belly and feel this area of your body as you exhale. Then the body will automatically inhale.

Then sitting on the edge of a hard wood chair or bench bend forward releasing the back muscles. To do this you must let the buttocks muscles release. This will lengthen the tired low back muscles. Come up from your legs. Then you can repeat the "ssss" sound.

These are what Elaine calls Whole Body Moves. They are like stretching without stretching. You use the weight of your body and let gravity do the work. This will again automatically bring oxygen into your muscles.

Come learn more at a FREE Prenatal Fitness Workshop on Saturday, April 10. The class is FREE to all FCC readers.

Also, mark your calendars for a Prenatal Partners Workshop on May 1. This is for the mom and the significant others in their life. Using the Petrone Method, Elaine can help both Mom and Dad through the stresses of pregnancy. Cost is $25 but mention FairfieldCountyChild.com and attend for free!

To register for both classes, call 203-656-3065 and leave your number or e-mail elaine@elainepetrone.com

Spring Into Safety With The Child Proof Coach

It might not feel like it today, but spring is almost here. Here are some wise words from our sponsor, The Child Proof Coach, about what to watch out for this time of year. Learn more about child safety at www.childproofcoach.com

Spring Into Safety
by Jay Martel

Spring is in the air. Shrieks of joy, birds and blue skies. The windows are springing open and the trampolines are springing to life as our children are released to the great outdoors. What’s better than fresh air, sweat, mud and fun?

Stop right there. Let’s think a little SAFETY as we transition to Spring with the following tips.

#1 Get to your outdoor play spaces before the kids do.
Your swing sets have been freezing and thawing all winter. The process leaves cracks, splinters, sharp edges, and loose bolts. Peel loose and sharp debris, sand sharp edges and tighten all bolts with a socket set. Check for squeaky swings and look for signs of animal droppings. Hang on it, try to rock it and ride the slide a couple of times.

#2 Check your Windows
Windows are being opened, washed and cleaned. Your 14 month old last year is now your 20 months old and capable of much more this year. Watch especially for low windows, window seats, windows by beds, and playroom windows. Know that if you open a window from the top, it is unlocked and it can be opened from the bottom. Beware, kids love to crank the crank on casement windows too. Get window guards, window stops, and window wedges where necessary.

#3 Be Aware of Landscaping Hazards
What are you going to be “spreading” this year besides good cheer?
Is there imminent fertilizer, lyme and tic control in your properties future? If you use a service, do you know what they have planned for you?

If not, find out. Ask questions, do a little research and get third party verification about what you will be breathing and absorbing in to your skin. Even some mulch is highly toxic and others are environmentally friendly.

Your kids are low to the ground and constantly rolling on the ground. They will be covered in whatever you put down. Think ahead and talk to someone who knows!

#4 Door Safety
Did you ever notice that doors inside your home close in the winter but not in the summer?  Even your house changes shape slightly with the seasons so check the baby gates inside your house too. They very well might need an adjustment to keep them working smoothly and in good order.

ENJOY YOUR SPRINGING AHEAD, SAFELY!

Child Proofing Tastefully by Guest Blogger Jay Martel

 Jay Martel

Please welcome guest blogger and site sponsor Jay Martel (AKA The Child Proof Coach) ! He's here to explain how you can balance safety and aesthetics in your home. Don't forget that during the month of February, Jay is offering FCC readers 3 special deals that will save you lots of $$$. Click here for details!

Let’s face it, nobody really wants to “childproof” their home, do they? No one voluntarily wants to make changes that could affect their homes beauty or its value. It’s generally a process that starts grudgingly, proceeds out of desperation and then becomes mandatory due to issues of your child’s survival. When we finally need to take some action, most encounter quite a bumpy road. It doesn’t have to be that way!

What if you could get your “childproofing” done tastefully, with attention to detail? What if you could match a baby gate to the trim of your home? Wouldn’t you love it if any hole had to made, it be the size of a pinprick that anyone with a pinky’s worth of spackle could fix in a minute, leaving no trace that a properly mounted safety gate had ever graced that particular threshold? Well, it can work that way. You can have your edges cushioned, have your chemicals locked, keep your dressers from tipping and much more without risking any permanent damage to your home. You can cure the fears of destruction while creating a womb of safety for your little one.

There is a select group of businesses that have been doing this for decades. They call themselves “Child Proofers”. Not handymen, not your builder, not a carpenter, but folks who have been working with “baby proofing” products for a very long time. They know what works, they know what you need, they know where to find them, and they know how to get the most out of them.

The assumption that “if you buy it in a store, it will work”, tends to be every parents’ downfall. The question becomes, “Do you call for help in anticipation or do you call for rescue when the road gets rough?”

The ideal is that you want it to be easy to get around your home yet safe for your child. You cannot afford to be struggling with inferior products for years. You want there to be no trace that your home was “baby proofed” by the time your child enters first grade.

All the information you need is just a phone call or a website away. If you are a seeker who wants to do things properly from the “get-go”, then get in touch with a “Child Proofer” who has a great reputation for quality and value. Every home and every parent’s threshold for safety are different. Talk to a “Child Proofer”. It’s not all about spending money. It’s about common sense, being creative and getting a little help that can go a very long way!
