Baby It's Cold Outside (and it's not even officially winter yet!)

Take a (free!) wintry stroll on Heckscher Farm at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center: Bundle up the kids for this free event, open Fridays on December 5, 12, 19 & 26. Let the free hot cocoa warm your hands as you walk along the luminary path. At 7 p.m,. you can visit the Observatory to see “The Star of Bethlehem.” You can also purchase Christmas trees in their north parking lot.

Buy a Christmas tree at Maple Row Tree Farm in Easton – and enjoy a hayride! This is a great place to pick up your holiday tree, featuring 200 acres of Douglas Firs, White Pines, Blue Spruces, Fraiser Firs, Concolor Firs, White Spruces, and Cannan Firs. If you are in the mood, you can cut down your own tree or, if you prefer, select from freshly cut ones. On the weekends, the Farm comes alive with arts and crafts in the gift shop, refreshments and hayrides.

Outdoor Ice-skating at the Westport P.A.L. Rink at Longshore: The rink is now open for the season! Skate outside with great views of the Long Island Sound. If you’re a little wobbly on your edges, consider group or private lessons. Parties can also be arranged for your little ones. Please call ahead for the latest schedule, as it does change.

Winter Solstice Concert Saturday, December 12 at 7:30 pm
Holiday Drum Circle Monday, December 15 at 7:30 pm

Winter Solstice Concert: Enjoy improvised and original music with roots in classical, jazz and world music. Instruments played include cello and waterphone, djembe doumbek, marimba and hang drum, among others. Surprise guests are featured along with audience participation and drum jams. Families are encouraged to bring their own instruments to join in on the fun. Price is $15.00/$10.00 for seniors and kids under 12.

Holiday Drum Circle: Relieve holiday stress by banging on available drums (or bringing your own), building into freestyle, high-energy group drum jams. Other acoustic instruments are also welcome. No experience required! Admission is $15.00/$5.00 seniors and kids under 12.

Children’s Winter Fair at the New Canaan Nature Center: An electric train depicts “Winter in New Canaan” at this weekend’s winter fair, taking place Friday, December 12 from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Saturday, December 13 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. On Friday, enjoy a full moon night hike and a cozy campfire, and stories about animals in winter. Saturday offers craft making, cookies, hot cocoa and story time. Ornaments from the 2008 Landmark collection will be on sale and one-of-a-kind wreaths are available for bidding! But the best of all? Santa will be on hand to have his photo taken with your little ones (and/or pets!) between 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Saturday. Ho ho ho!
