Share Your Favorite Ice Cream Spot in Fairfield County

(I must be dreaming... a sunny morning? On a Saturday? We were out early today to grab coffee and when I walked out the door I finally felt that summery feeling. In my mind, summer = ice cream, so that's why I'm rerunning the post below from last June. It got quite a response the first time around and I hope more of you will weigh in now).

I have a favorite ice cream spot, but it's in Mystic -- a little far from home. I love it because the ice cream is delicious and you really feel like you're going back in time when you enter the doors. Everything just smells and tastes like Summer at the Mystic Sweets Shop. Now that my daughter is old enough, I'm on the lookout for a place in Fairfield County that's just as wonderful to bring her, so I'm turning to you. I've found two places that are good for very different reasons (see below), but they are not my favorites:
  • Dairy Queen on Summer Street in Stamford. If you don't mind a little dinginess and a super long line on hot Summer evenings, then DQ is the place to be. Their Blizzards never disappoint and you can't go wrong with the soft serve.
  • And on the total other end of the fancy spectrum is Gelatissimo Artisan Gelato at 26 Forest Street in New Canaan. Here you'll find a beautiful, sparkling interior and delicious authentic Italian gelato. Their web site is still under construction at www.gelatissimo.net but you can read more about Gelatissimo by clicking here.
Please hit COMMENTS below to add your favorite ice cream spot in Fairfield County. Tell us why you and your kid(s) love it and the general location. You can post anonymously or use your name. Either way, thanks!

Gofer Ice Cream Holiday Cake Winner is Shelley Howe of Norwalk!

“Ice-cream is exquisite. What a pity it isn't illegal.” - Voltaire

A few years ago I came across this quote and I often think of it when digging into my favorite treat. Now that I'm all grown up, my list of vices is growing shorter so it's fun to take a walk on the wild side once in awhile with a nice bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough.

Thanks to Gofer Ice Cream in Darien, Shelley Howe of Norwalk can indulge herself as well. She's the winner of a Gofer ice cream cake as part of the latest FCC giveaway. Anyone who was an existing subscriber or became one in time for the Stocking Stuffer email on December 5th was eligible, but Shelley took the cake.

With locations in Darien, Stamford and Greenwich, Gofer is our local stop not only for ice cream cakes and pies. but for delicious soft serve, hard ice cream and Gofer Lite (a guiltless option) too.

The standard ice cream cake is a layer of Gofer premium chocolate and a layer of premium vanilla, separated by fudge and chocolate cookie crunch and topped with tasty frosting. Gofer can also make custom cakes with almost every flavor they offer with at least 48 hours notice.

Congratulations Shelley and thank you to everyone who entered and of course, thank you to Gofer Ice Cream!

So I've compiled a list of all the establishments and it's now an official poll. So please vote (see poll above) and pass on to your friends! The winning establishment will be recognized with ummmm, not sure what yet. But they will be recognized! Thanks for your input.

"Good Design Should Be a Part of Every Day Life" - Q&A with Local Fashion Designer and Mom, Jennifer Butler

Jennifer Butler is the owner and fashion designer behind Jennifer Butler Made to Measure on the Post Road in Fairfield. We've never met in person, but I've been admiring her and her designs for children (examples from her new Spring line shown above), women and men ever since I attended her Fall fashion show in September. She kindly agreed to an email interview, so read on to hear all she has to say about fashion, food and Fairfield County. Don't miss her upcoming Spring fashion show this Thursday, February 28th at the Fairfield Theater Company. Click here for tickets.

Q:Tell us about a typical day for you.
A. My cat wakes me slightly before dawn by touching my face, then screaming if i don't get up and feed him. That's how i drag myself to the gym everyday-fear my cat will wake my children before dawn, but it works. I come home, pack lunches, get Olivia (age 7) on the bus, my husband drops Hazel (age 3) at pre-school, or 2 days a week she comes in with me for a few hours, then her sitter picks her up. I'm open until 6pm, cutting, fitting, designing, managing things, wondering what i was thinking opening the store-just kidding- i love it. Then they both get dropped off to me. I squeeze another hour or so in, (I found they are much mellower if they come to me, than if I'm coming home 'late', at 7:30, and they're wired and waiting) and we head home and do dinner and bedtime. I'm a bit of a night owl, so I hang with my husband or catch up on work, email all the people i never see because I work all the time.

Q. In your down time, what do you do with your kids?
A.The bummer of being me is I work 6 days a week, so we don't have a lot of downtime. Sundays are it. When the days are longer and there's no school, we hit the beach or playgrounds. My husband works Saturdays, too, but at night, so the girls and i tend to walk down the street and rent a movie at Media Wave (a video store at 1596 Post Road, Fairfield) where everyone is nice and knows what you're talking about and we have a chick night. We often go to other friends' houses and visit, or have friends over. We're also library hounds, but our favorite place to go is the Downtown Cabaret Children's Theater in Bridgeport. We love it. We're pick-per-show ticket holders, so we go to all of them, but play it by ear on the date in case I have to work or there's a birthday to attend. We also see Dan Zanes whenever he's in the tristate area.

Q: What's your favorite restaurant in Fairfield County for family dinners?
A: We pretty much never eat out. I cook for them most nights. It's our family time

Q: What's your favorite restaurant for civilized dinners (date night)?
A: What is this 'date night' you speak of? Seriously, we almost never go out to dinner. We usually go out for music, when someone we like is touring. One of the reasons I'd like to raise money for the Fairfield Theater Company is because I have this fantasy I will not have to drive to Manhattan or New Haven for the rest of my life to see a decent band, and I can use that $30 per night in driving/sitting towards college. But we did go to Sarabande in Fairfield for Valentines Day, since the romantic lighting made me look less like Eddie Munster, (re: night owl backlash)and the food is great, but that's only because I couldn't get tickets for the Gutter Twins at the Bowery Ballroom.

Q: What's your favorite thing about living and working in Fairfield County?
A: I love the proximity to New York without the hassle. There is an edge of sophistication without the attitude. People here 'get' what I do, but they also don't live and breathe it. I love that I can run the trails behind my house if i can't make it to the gym, but I'm not in the middle of nowhere. I can go to the beach after work in 2 minutes. I can send my kids to school and not worry all the time. I have made some of my closest friends here, male and female, and they are all very far from suburban cliches.

Q: Where do you shop for your kids every day clothes? or do they wear your fabulous creations every day?
A: With the exception of a few Old Navy hand me down stragglers on Hazel, they only wear my clothes, or they're out of the family. Seriously, they're about to turn 8 and 4, so I'm taking advantage of the fact they don't want the latest Abercrombie tiny prostitute outfit. I'm sure that will all change someday, but I'm hoping they run with the individuality thing and create their own clothes. Check back in a few years and see if I'm in an asylum.

Q: What's your favorite Spring trend in kids' fashion?
A: This year, I really, really love what I've done. Lots of white, tomato red and black accents - like if the white stripes were actually still married, and had kids. And lots of greens, blues, and yellow. Clear, clean and fresh. I know everyone is not going to spent $38 on a kid's skirt, so my stuff better be amazing. I love making kids clothes. I have to be cut off at showtime "No Jen, we don't need another girl in a dress" "but it's soooo cute!!" All my summer everyday stuff goes in the wash, so it doesn't seem precious to me. Honestly, you know they're going to get ice cream on it or fall down in it. I try to make stuff to hide the food stains or handle color safe bleach. Good design should be a part of everyday life.

Q: Do your kids influence your designs?
A: Always. Olivia loves yellow. I would never have used it if not for her. She just came up with the idea of snap off organza sleeves on a dress so it could have short sleeves and long sleeves. She also combined a chartreuse knit cardigan with red trim for her, pink for her sister, and blue green color blocked skirts. She amazes me. Hazel is obsessed with changing her clothes. As soon as she comes in she says "Can I try something on?" If I say "Not now", it's like i told her there's no Santa. And she's into 'straps' which means anything sleeveless, even in winter. If you come into the store, it is highly possible to find her in a flower girl dress in the middle of the day.

Q: What's your favorite Spring trend for women?
A: Dresses and waistlines. I wore a lot of dresses last summer, and a few dresses this winter, and I loved how easy it was to get going. Fixed waistlines are tricky on some people, so more work for me, but i love how pulled together it looks, and powerful. Like a sheath with a jacket for work, or a fluid dress for a less strict environment. I'm also doing a lot of strong blues, and lots of greens, and some red, and orange of course, and a lot of white.

Q: Fill in the blank. You should visit Jennifer Butler Made to Measure because .... I offer a different view point, but gear it to the individual. It may look like a page in W, but it comes from a working mother. What you wear affects how you feel. If you put on a great fitting, gorgeous dress, you're going to feel great. If you have a cool skirt to throw on with a tank that you could wear to the playground with your kids at sunset, or wear to dinner in the city, run into your ex-boyfriend and not feel 'what happened to hot me?' I think a lot of women have too much on their plate. If I can make them a few great things to get them through their very busy days, I've done my job.

Greenwich 1-on-1 Provides Personalized Sports Coaching For the Whole Family

Greenwich 1-on-1 is a great new business based in Greenwich (but available to everyone, not just Greenwich residents) and if you have an athletic child, or one that wishes he/she were a little more so, read on...Greenwich 1-on-1's unique approach to coaching can make all the difference in a child's performance in everything from baseball to yoga to lacrosse. It's not just for the kids though! Visit www.greenwich1on1.com to learn more about how Greenwich 1-on-1 can help Mom and Dad too and check out the interview below with Valerie Erde and Melissa Davis, cofounders of Greenwich 1-on-1. They're two busy Fairfield County moms who just wrapped up their first very successful Spring Break sports clinic and who have a lot more on the horizon.

Q: What is Greenwich 1on1?

Valerie: Greenwich 1-on-1 is a new company that provides highly personalized sport-specific and general fitness training no matter what your age, your starting point, or your goals – whether you want to simply learn a new sport, enjoy being a solid recreational player, or become a competitive athlete. Though the name is 1-on-1, and private training is our primary focus, it is meant to reflect the general idea of a small setting. We do offer semi-private lessons and clinics as well, but our clinics have a maximum ration of 6:1 so that each participant still gets plenty of individual attention.

I really believe that with the right instruction that helps build confidence and skills, plus a little patience and practice, anyone can enjoy sports. There are sports for those who love the idea of being on teams and want to compete against others and sports for more solo flyers where it’s about reaching your own personal best.

Nowadays, with the dwindling of playground time, often playing organized sports is important for kids in staying fit. Besides hopefully developing a lifelong love of fitness, sports can really help build character. As Dr. Jordan Metzl, a New York physician specializing in sports medicine says, “The lessons kids get from playing sports are completely as valuable as the sports skills themselves. The field or court is a safe place to play out and learn the issues of life. You can experience winning and losing, joy and pain, what it means to effectively prepare and what happens when someone is better than you."

Melissa: We also have extremely talented coaches that bring high-level expertise to working with both children and adults. Instead of walking into a sports facility and being assigned a trainer who knows little about you or your child, parents will be provided with a variety of coaches from which to choose.

Q: Why do you feel 1 on 1 coaching is so effective?

Valerie: It’s just a fact that people learn better and more quickly in a small setting and I have seen that firsthand with my children, who combined have taken private, small and large classes in baseball, gymnastics, karate, skiing, soccer, swimming and tennis between them, and my own experiences getting back into tennis and skiing after a somewhat long mom hiatus. You get to work on the areas that you need to work on in a way that you cannot do in a larger group.

Melissa: Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and learns in different ways. Greenwich 1-on-1’s goal is to develop a training plan unique to each client. We hope to build confidence and skills that allow children to return to their respective teams as more valuable players. Our training will help children not just to be better athletes but also to have more confidence in all areas of their lives.

Q: How did you two end up working together?

Valerie: In June, I had placed a post on Craigslist looking for coaches to get a sense of their site as a source for talent. Well, not only did I receive responses from some truly excellent coaches, but Melissa sent me her resume. I took one look at her background -- college athlete, former youth recreation director, and business development manager at Sports Illustrated -- called her immediately and told her that it while it would be great to have her as a soccer coach, I knew that she could bring much more to the table . When we met we just clicked, plus she had great ideas and her enthusiasm. I knew she would be the perfect Sports Director.

Melissa: I responded to an ad that Valerie posted on Craigslist. After meeting her, I knew that we could work well together. Our backgrounds were complementary and we shared a similar vision for the business.

Q: How does each of your backgrounds help with what you are trying to accomplish today?

Valerie: Though on the surface one wouldn’t really see how my background fits into a sports training company, but the reality is, throughout my career in management consulting, media, and later as an au pair counselor, I have always had a client service orientation and been very successful at finding and promoting talent. And really the core of our business is the coaches we hire and how we and they provide the best service to our clients that we can.

Melissa: I have always been passionate and involved in sports. I played numerous sports in high school and college and I remain a competitive runner. My professional background has centered on sports, marketing and youth recreation. I worked at Sports Illustrated in the New Business Development Department and I was the director of client relations for a large recreation company in Los Angeles.

Q: Where do you see Greenwich 1on1 in five years?

Valerie: Down the road, we hope to become the place for parents to go when they are looking for private lessons in any area-sports, arts, hobbies, enrichement - whether for their kids or themselves.

Melissa: We hope eventually to expand out company to reach children and adults throughout Fairfield County. We also hope to provide lessons in other extracurricular activities besides sports. We see ourselves as a one-stop shop for both parents and their children.

Q: Why are your coaches special?

Melissa: Our coaches have a variety of experiences and have been selected not just for their athletic talent, but because of their enthusiasm and patience. We have coaches who played professionally, coaches who have played in college and coaches who are just good teachers. We had a huge response from coaches who applied for positions with Greenwich 1 on 1 and we take pride in only having chosen those we felt were special. Our coaches have been thoroughly screened, their backgrounds have been checked and they are trained in CPR and First Aid.

Valerie: I’m pretty sure that we are also the only organization that requires its coaches to attend a workshop in sports safety. We also expect our coaches to be positive role models for the people they instruct.

Q: Tell us about a success story you've seen with 1 on 1 coaching.

Valerie: I have seen was with my own son. Last year, my son was feeling a lack of confidence in his soccer playing. We enlisted coach Mike Schechter’s, who is now on board with us, for some private soccer lessons. My son skills’ rapidly improved, but more important, Mike helped boost his confidence. The last day of the fall season, my son kicked his first goal in a team situation in more than a year. Words can not describe the joy on his face that day. And he loved going to every session with coach Mike; it made him feel special and he was able to work on the areas that made him a little fearful – like chesting a ball – in a very low pressure situation and then he took those skills and brought them to the team play.

Melissa: I have a very direct, personal experience with this question. I worked diligently with a local high school track coach who broke down my running technique and developed a training plan specific to my goals. He took two minutes off my average mile and pushed me to place third overall (female) in the Ridgefield Half Marathon.

Q: So you're both moms. As a mom, what's your favorite part about living in Fairfield County?

Valerie: I have a daughter who is into the arts and nature and a son who loves nature and sports. Fairfield County offers such great mix of good schools, cultural opportunities, parks, beaches - and plenty of sports of course!

Melissa: Fairfield County is a wonderfully family-friendly place to live. My husband and I have two young boys (ages 2 and 4) and there is no shortage of options of worthy experiences to give them. The school systems in Fairfield County are the best in the country and every town has plenty of parks and play space and a multitude of recreation leagues for children of all ages. I doubt there is a better county in all of American in which to launch this type of business.

Q: What's your favorite family activity in Fairfield County ?

Valerie: Biking to Tod’s Point together and stopping somewhere for ice cream.

Melissa: One of our favorite destinations is the Norwalk Childrens Museum and Aquarium. We take our boys there at least once a month. They love to pet the stingrays!

Call now to arrange your first private or semi-private lesson with Greenwich 1-on-1!
